Message from Our Superintendent

L MillingtonDear Parents, Friends, Students, and Faculty,

On Tuesday, March 27, Calvin Terrell, founder and lead facilitator of the Social Centric Institute will be at RUHS to provide presentations and trainings to our students and staff regarding building a positive school climate, bullying reduction, and collaborative culture building.

The Social Centric Institute is an organization that provides education and training to people of all ages to help enhance human interaction and global progress.

Tuesday’s presentation will focus on building a positive school climate at RUHS, and specifically, on the ways hurtful language and behavior can negatively impact our school community. Through discussions, small groups, and a whole-school assembly, students and staff will have the opportunity to reflect on ways they can show compassion and courage as they work to build a more tolerant and inclusive school atmosphere.

It is our belief that when we discuss our individual and collective roles in preventing prejudice, hate, and violence of any kind, we are involved in building a safer community and school.

We are notifying parents/guardians and community members of this event for a couple of reasons:

First – it is our hope that you will participate in this growth process by discussing this assembly with your child and continuing the dialogue at home. We also invite you to join us for dinner (5:30 pm in the RU Cafeteria); and/or a community meeting (7:00 pm in the RU Auditorium) to meet Calvin and learn more about this exciting and important initiative.

Second – we feel that it is important to give you the option of opting your child out of the discussions and assembly. The presentations involve serious issues and language related to acts of violence and prejudice, and may not be suitable for all students.

If you do not want your child to participate in this assembly, please notify us by 10:00 am on Monday, March 26, so that we may make the proper arrangements to accommodate your wishes.  You may email me directly at

Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your child. We are confident that this event will reinforce quality learning and the building of a caring community. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me personally.
