In order to prepare students for the 21st Century and to compete on the global stage, schools must engage political, municipal, business, non-governmental organizations, and higher education to develop broad-based community partnerships. Further, schools must strive to develop curriculum and programs that reflect real-life situations and provide students with experiential learning opportunities that are rigorous and relevant. To that end, the OSSD has made significant progress in forging partnerships with the broader community.
Randolph Union High School’s (RUHS) School of Technology represents a strong partnership with GW Plastics, a local manufacturer that exposes students to the world of entrepreneurship, design, and manufacturing in the most direct manner possible. The entire course takes place on the floor of GW Plastics’ plant where students work directly with scientists and manufacturing staff in a real-life setting. RUHS students learn GW Plastics’ complete manufacturing process, including human resource management, marketing, accounting and finance, product engineering and design, machining and injection molding, quality assurance, and supply chain management.
RUHS’s Project Based Learning (PBS) laboratory requires students to engage real-life problems spanning public and private sector issues in finance, communications, finance, manufacturing, higher education, public administration, and more. The projects are developed in conjunction with senior administrative representatives from each sector. Students, upon completion of their work must present their findings and outcomes to community and business leaders.
Randolph Technical Career Center (RTCC) has implemented a new Advanced Manufacturing Program, which start in the fall of 2018. The program has entered into a working partnership with Vermont Technical College (VTC), GW Plastics, and LED Dynamics. Upon completion of the advanced manufacturing program, students will either enter the workforce at GW Plastics and LED Dynamics or continue their college education at VTC with significant scholarships from all partners, paid internships throughout their college experience, and full-time employment at GW Plastics and LED Dynamics after graduation.
Randolph Elementary School’s Farm-to-School program links the school to over 20 local agriculture providers and was established to expose students to healthy, locally grown foods and to support local providers. RES student learn sustainable food practices, thereby building greater awareness of agricultural career opportunities. In addition, the Farm-to-School compact bridges greater community awareness and appreciation of our students, teachers, and adds rigor and relevance to our teaching-learning environment.
